Unity of Santa Rosa is holding its annual Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 2nd, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The sale, canceled last year due to COVID-19, is back. We have a variety of goods, including a dining table and chairs and other assorted small furniture; artwork; clothing and shoes; books galore; lamps; camping gear; a portable stereo; jewelry; kitchen items; and of course, toys; and a tuxedo. Weather permitting, the sale will be held outside in front of the church. If the sale is moved indoors due to inclement weather, masks will be required, regardless of vaccination status.
When discussing the rummage sale before the Zoom service this Sunday, one Unity member said, "It's about more than a sale--it's a community-building event as well." How true. We build community as we re-circulate our treasures, envisioning the things we've loved finding new homes and bringing joy to new people; as we prepare for the sale together; and as we come out to shop, meeting new neighbors for the first time and seeing old friends we may not have seen for a long time. I remember running into an old friend at the Unity of Santa Rosa Rummage Sale three years ago. People kept approaching him and mentioning that he looked like a certain celebrity. At first, I was facing the other direction. I heard the comparisons and turned around, knowing whom I would see. I said, "I don't think you look like that celebrity. I think you look like my old friend." From there, we were off and running, reminiscing about a joint birthday party we once had after discovering we share a birthday. It was a special moment, one I wouldn't have had if not for the community-building aspect of the church rummage sale.
So, we invite you to enjoy your neighborhood spiritual community. Volunteer if you can. Donate a gently loved treasure for someone else to find. Come out to shop and meet old friends and make new ones. You'll be glad you did. And so will we.
